Research

The PSO (Planning Scheduling and Optimization) is a research unit of the Digital Industry Center of the Fondazione Bruno Kessler doing research and technology transfer in the areas of automated planning and scheduling. The unit focuses on three major application areas, namely flexible manufacturing, robotics and the autonomous remote operation.

The main research directions of the unit are:

State-of-the-art Temporal Planning

  • Expressive automated planning with (continuous) resources and constraints

  • Connection with motion planning

Using Reinforcement Learning to guide Planning and Scheduling

  • Automated synthesis of heuristics, pruning rules, macro-actions, …

  • Learning used to specialize planning technology for a domain

    • Not only plan generation

Planning meets Formal Methods

  • Theoretical foundations of Planning and Scheduling

  • Monitoring for execution (e.g. Runtime Verification for Planning systems)

  • Plan and Domain validation

Practical Architectures for PSO solutions

  • Flexible Manufacturing

  • Logistics

  • Autonomous Robotics

    • Temporal Task and Motion Planning
  • Digital Twins
